Other tools and resources
A hobbyist makes ORBAT Mapper. If you need a more professional tool, or if you want to make military overlays, use one of these excellent tools:
- map.army - a very good web application. Use it to draw map overlays with symbols and tactical graphics.
- ODIN open source command and control information system. This is a desktop application for almost all operating systems. It uses Electron.
- MGRS Mapper - "operational graphics tool for junior leaders". You must pay a subscription. A free version with limited functions is available.
There are only a few specialized tools to draw ORBAT charts. These are the tools that I know:
- Spatial Illusions unit generator.
- Order of Battle Generator. This is an online editor. It is very good for Battle Order style charts.
- Battle Order chart templates (PNG files for a drawing program)
Do you want to make your own tools and maps? These libraries and resources can help you:
- milsymbol - Military Symbols in JavaScript
- MILSTD Military symbol standards in TSV and JS
- STANAG APP-6 Military symbol standards in TSV and JS
- Joint Military Symbology Markup Language (JMSML)
- Spatial Illusions - the home of milsymbol. Look at the "General Demos" section
- @orbat-mapper/convert-symbology - an NPM package. It changes symbol identification codes with letters into codes with numbers, and codes with numbers into codes with letters.
